Silent Night, Deadly Night 2025
It's Christmas time and one of my naughty, guilty pleasures is the 1984 cult holiday classic Silent Night, Deadly Night. This gets several spins this time of the year and it never gets old. This movie was yanked from theaters back in its day because some parent groups threw a fit about a killer Santa Claus. Those parents did not seem to mind the Santa Claus that kills in Christmas Evil three years before. They say there is no such thing as bad publicity and this uproar made this movie even more in demand and was a hit on VHS. It was so successful on video that there were four sequels in the late eighties and early 90s. Back in 2012 there was a loose remake called Silent Night that I enjoy very much too. But since then this property has been dormant. Until now. I read this last summer that there was a remake of Silent Night, Deadly Night that was already shot and would get a theatrical release just in time for the holidays.
We meet adult Billy right off the bat and he is doing things with an ax that Billy did in the original, the back story comes in later. Billy is talking to himself except the voice talking back is not his, think Venom here. This voice has him doing things for a reason, think Dexter here. I went in with very low expectations and walked away entertained and liking this very much. It is a really good remake that uses some of the old and inserts some great new ideas. It even uses some of the original music from the first film in just the right spots of the movie. If you liked the original or just Christmas Horror in general be sure to check this one out. It only had a one week run at theaters but should be available for digital purchase just in time for Christmas and comes out in physical media in February. Merry Christmas!
