Black Dynamite!!!

Of course after posting my favorite flicks of last year I see the need to add another title after watching Black Dynamite. This spoof of the black exploitation films of the 70s was fantastic. It was made just like one of those films complete with bad production values, bad stock footage, bad plot holes covered with voice overs and hilarious stunt work. The genius of it is that it is all on purpose. The villain at the end is superb; I do not want to give it away. Highly recommended.

RIP Peter Graves. "Billy, have you ever seen a grown man naked ?" is one of my favorite all time lines. Clarence, you have clearance.

Looking forward to FX's Justified tomorrow night. I loved Timothy Olyphant in Deadwood so I will give this one a shot.

LOST, where are you going?

Baseball season is just around the corner. I am as giddy as a school boy!

Next rant: Do all movies have to be 3D now? Really? Stay tuned.

Top flicks of '09

I have compiled my top movies of last year and put them together for your enjoyment. Remember I am not a critic, I only play one on the Internet. I know I may have missed some good movies in the list but a lot of them have not been released to home video yet, I do not get to the theater much anymore. Enjoy...

1. Zombieland- The funniest movie on the list. Superbly made and it has a fantastic cameo in it. I love Twinkies and Woody in this movie shares the love of them. Best of all it all starts in Garland, TX.

2. Inglorious Bastards- Tarantino did an outstanding job with this throwback to War World II. He made plenty of references to two of my favorite war flicks (Kelley's Heroes and The Dirty Dozen) and I cannot imagine any body else but Brad Pitt playing the lead role.

3. Star Trek- Those Bad Robot guys did a great job of a reboot on a franchise that desperately needed one. The cast was spot on and it was great to see Leonard Nimoy sport the ears one more time. Bring on more! Kahn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4. Up- This is the best animated I have ever seen. It is a story that can be enjoyed by all and I wonder when will this talking device for dogs will be available.

5. Avatar- James Cameron took enough time off between projects and he does not disappoint with his latest creation. I saw this in the theater in 3D and it was pretty cool. Alot better than back in the 80s, Jaws 3D anyone? The story here has been rehashed from another movie but when it looks this cool who cares?

6. Public Enemies- I have always liked Gangster movies and it was nice to have a new one out. The first movie of Dillinger awhile back left a lot to be desired so I am certainly glad Michael Mann made this movie. Johnny Depp was spot on while Christian Bale looked like he wanted to be else where.

7. The Hurt Locker- A very intense war drama much like Platoon. This flick keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time. Props to director Kathryn Bigelow, she has come a long way since the classic Near Dark.

8. Trick R Treat- This fantastic horror movie was on the shelve for two years because the studio did not know what to do with it. They finally released it to home video during Halloween and it scored big with critics and audiences. Think Creepshow, this is the best movie you did not see last year.

9. Invictus- A true story made by a great story teller. Come on Clint, more in front of the camera too!

This year I am looking forward to The Expendables, Iron Man 2, and Hereafter.

Ranger pitchers and catchers reported to Spring Training today. All can dream of a championship season right now. Perhaps the playoffs anyway.

I'm back!

I cannot believe it has been almost a year since I have been on here. I intend to do better at this. I have plenty of free time on my hands right now. The Big Game is a week away and I am rooting for the Saints. Pitchers and catchers will be reporting soon and I am excited for that and the fact the Rangers have a new owner. It was a quiet off season but some nice little moves were made to improve the roster and the Angels took quite a hit to their roster.

Movie watching is my is still one of my favorite sports and I have been watching alot because I finally got a new TV to go along with my PS3. I have many blu ray reviews to do. Stay tuned...

TV show of the week: 24, Jack is back!

Most anticipated new release coming out Tuesday: Zombieland. I hear this was really good and will blind buy.

Thanks to all of my family and friends for the birthday wishes and gifts. You guys are the best.

Top Movies of 2008

Did you watch the Super Bowl? Best ever? Maybe 2nd best. I have compiled my list of my favorite movies in 2008. Remember, I am not a movie critic and I have not seen all the releases of last year but here it is:
1. The Dark Knight-It is shameful to call this a comic book movie. Heath gets the Oscar for his take on the Joker, the second best movie villain ever. Vader, you are still #1!
2. Gran Torino-Vintage Eastwood. The guy got robbed for not getting nominated. I hope Clint continues to work in front of the camera more.
3. Rambo-Pure action flick. Nice to see this character back on the screen and even better to see Stallone directing his own films now. Thanks for bringing Johnny back.
4. WallE- Pixar movies seem to get better as they go. Nice lesson with this movie too.
5. Appaloosa-I am so thankful there was a western released this year. Good work by Ed Harris.
6. Iron Man- Marvel has started a nice franchise with this film.
7. The Bank Job- Great little heist flick. Statham needs to do more like this one.
Pitcher and catchers report in less then 2 weeks, I am thrilled! Now if we can just sign a free agent or two.

Top Ten: Christmas Movies!

Since it is that time of the year, here are my rankings. Go and watch some or all of these and enjoy!

  1. A Christmas Story
  2. It's a Wonderful Life
  3. Love Actually
  4. How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Original)
  5. Christmas Vacation
  6. A Charlie Brown Christmas
  7. Elf
  8. Family Man
  9. Miracle on 34th Street (Original)
  10. Scrooged

The Rangers finally traded some of their catching surplus. Gerald Laird was traded to Detroit for 2 minor leage pitching prospects. I consider that not a bad deal because this organization always needs pitching depth. Now, will they pick up a free agent? Ben Sheets is mighty tempting.

Will the Cowboys make the playoffs? Find out Saturday night. I hope they have the NFL network where I am going.

Quantum of Ok

Every fews years I get to experience a new movie from the oldest movie franchise around so it is always quite an event. James Bond has been entertaining crowds for almost 50 years now with 22 movies and I just about love all of them all. The franchise went through a reboot with the last movie Casino Royale and I was not onboard with this move but was cautiously optimistic though. They started off right by selecting Daniel Craig and this guy nails the role. He is not like any of the past Bonds on screen but is the Bond from the original novels which is quite an improvement for the character. Casino Royale turned out to be fantastic and dare I say one of the best of the series.
Quantum of Solace follows up right where Casino left off and immediately jumps into a car chase already in progress, nice way to start a movie. Things pretty much go downhill from there. The story is average, the editing bad, and the direction is lackluster. Director Marc Forster has a resume of low to mid level budget dramas so I am not sure why he was selected for the movie. He has never done an action movie let alone a $200 million dollar one and it shows. The only thing this movie has going for it is Danel Craig and he is a complete bad ass in the film and his Bond does anything to get the job done. As always I look foward to the next installment though.
The Cowboys have won 2 in a row and are back in the chase, let's see what happens on Thanksgiving where hopefully the main entree will be Seahawk. All is quiet in the Baseball free agency hunt so far but it will heat up soon. Unfortunately the Rangers will stay in the cold.
Movie of the week: I always view some old Bond movies when a new one is out so I am going with From Russia with Love. Connery is greatness.
TV show of the week: Robot Chicken: Star Wars 2. Boba Fett slicing up Ewoks with a lightsaber=priceless.
Happy Thanksgiving!
