Triple Shot Tuesday Horror Flicks

I have been working a lot recently so I decided to take off early on Tuesday.  I went to the gym, got my heavy lifting session in, 3 miles of cardio, and did not brag about it on Facebook either.  I also ran errands, picked up some little people, picked up some blu rays, and yelled at some kids for throwing rocks at my house.  My day was complete by 4pm so I had all night to chill and what better way to do that than to watch some horror movies.  I decided to get caught up some new Scream Factory titles I got and a new little title just recently released.

I have never seen this little gem from 1981 before and this was pretty good.  This ranks well with all the other horror released at the time.  Now this offers nothing new, it’s counselors at a summer camp being hunted by a killer out for revenge.  It’s a pretty creepy movie and looks fantastic.  Also sports a cast of a young Jason Alexander and Holly Hunter along with make-up from horror icon Tom Savini.

I just stumbled upon this at the store new release section and looked it up on IMDB.  It’s got nice reviews but what caught my eye is that it was made on a budget for $35-40K.  A horror theme park is going out of business so the employees decide to party after closing one night but two masked guys show up and the park employees start disappearing.  Despite its budget limitations and bad acting this little horror flick was put together well and has a nice score too.  I can definitely tell this director is a big John Carpenter fan.

Speaking of the great John Carpenter, I finished the night with John Carpenter’s Body Bags.  This was a Showtime pilot that was not picked up but at least got this anthology release.  This has 3 shorts on it with The Gas Station being the highlight of the movie which was directed by Carpenter.  It features another short by Carpenter and one from horror director Tobe Hooper.  I have not see in this in a long time as I had a VHS copy from laser disc so I was glad Scream Factory released this last year.

An Evening with George Romero and the Dead

The Alamo Drafthouse recently screened George Romero’s classic Dawn of the Dead with the director himself, actor, make-up man, stuntman Tom Savini, actor David Emege (Flyboy), and actor Scott Reiniger (Roger) all in attendance.  Yours truly attended with a buddy that wants to remain anonymous; we will just call him my favorite made up name “Marty”.   I have never seen DoD on the big screen so this was a real treat to view this low budget, cult classic and to listen to the legendary director before it started.

Romero and the actors talked for almost an hour before the lights went out as he talked about some great behind the scenes stories of making this movie and some of his others.  Romero’s Knightriders kept coming up so I had to order that bad boy last week to check out the one non horror Romero movie.  Tom Savini has worked with Romero a lot over the years and had much output to offer with all of Romero’s stories. Savini went on to some of his own flicks with his directing the remake of Night of the Living Dead and discussed From Dusk til Dawn too.  Sex Machine was pretty cool.

Now one hot topic that came up was AMC’s The Walking Dead.  These guys let us know that they do not care for the show but did not really elaborate on why too much.  Jealousy?  Getting screwed on royalties of some sort?    I am still curious about why the hate on the show.  Romero even said he has been approached by executive producer Greg Nicotero, (Nicotero worked on Romero’s Day of the Dead) to work on the show but respectfully declined.

It was a fun evening and a great way to see a horror classic.  Bring on John Carpenter next year!

New Release Tuesday

This looked bad, the concept sounded bad, and it tanked at the box office so I am staying away from the turkey.

A & E got me hooked on this show last year and second season proved to be a good season.  Walt Longmire is a Wyoming sheriff that sure seems to deal with a lot of murders in his neck of the woods.  Walt is a great detective and always gets his criminal at the end but is also dealing with something from his past and that maybe revealed in season three which starts June 2.

I like Spike Jones’ films and I am a bit intrigued by this one.  I am pretty sure I could not fall in love with a computer but I would like to see the spin they put on this.

Pumping Iron is one of my all time favorite documentaries and not just because of Arnold but because the subject of weightlifting has always peaked my interest and lifting has been a good part of my life and it has been a constant for me for a decade now.  I have heard good things about this so I will give it a shot soon.

So is it a Zombie-Terminator or a Terminator-Zombie?

Twilight brings us the limited release of 3,000.  In a corporate-controlled future, an ultra-violent sport known as Rollerball represents the world, and one of its powerful athletes is out to defy those who want him out of the game.
