Recent New Releases

A Man Called Otto- Otto is a grump who's given up on life following the loss of his wife and wants to end it all. When a young family moves in nearby, he meets his match in quick-witted Marisol, leading to a friendship that will turn his world around.  This movie came and went with hardly any buzz at all.  Readers of the book hated it because it was completely different and not even Tom Hanks could save this stinker.  Pass.

The Whale- A reclusive, morbidly obese English teacher attempts to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter.  It’s cool to see Encino Man win and Oscar for this movie.  I may have to give this a rental some time.

Easter Bunny Massacre- A group of old school friends are reunited for Easter where they are confronted about a crime they committed by a serial killer dressed in a Easter Bunny outfit.  Now, this is what I am talking about.  I actually found this at Wal Mart so I know what I am doing this weekend.

M3gan- A robotics engineer at a toy company builds a life-like doll that begins to take on a life of its own.  This was great!  It is The Terminator meets Chucky and it played great with a theater full of people.  This includes the gorier R version which I am looking forward to.  The PG-13 version was too tame but that helped this pic score big bucks at the box office.

Babylon- A tale of outsized ambition and outrageous excess, it traces the rise and fall of multiple characters during an era of unbridled decadence and depravity in early Hollywood.  I do not get it.  Trailers for this looked awful and it bombed big time on its opening weekend.  Yet, people love this movie and it scored some technical award noms even though not many saw it.

New Release Tuesday

The Adventures of Batman- The Dynamic Duo battles crime in Gotham City.  This is a Warner Archive blu release of the 1968 show.  It is nowhere near the quality of Batman: The Animated series but I am a sucker for all Batman.

Detective Knight: Independence- Detective James Knight's last-minute assignment to the Independence Day shift turns into a race against time to stop an unbalanced EMT worker who's posing as a cop.  This was listed as Bruno’s last movie for a while, but another has popped up and that will be his bow out.  The first Detective Knight movie was not bad, I have not seen the second one yet.  So I am invested in this trilogy so bring this one on!

Little Dixie- Doc facilitates a fragile truce between the Governor and Cartel, trading prosecutorial leniency for finance. With no more truce, Doc is left to fend for himself and protect the one untainted thing in his life: his daughter, Little Dixie.  Well known jerk Grillo has 13 movie/tv shows due this year.  Will any of them be any good?  Probably not.

The Quiet Man- A retired American boxer returns to the village of his birth in 1920s Ireland, where he falls for a spirited redhead whose brother is contemptuous of their union.  I am always glad to see John Wayne movies get released on blu ray and this is one of his best from director John Ford.  Bring on The Shootist please.
