New Release Tuesday

The Jack Ryan series is made up of some good movies but for some reason Paramount has screwed themselves with this franchise a couple of times so now we have another reboot.  Chris Pine will be a fine Jack Ryan but I am most looking forward to Kevin Costner’s mentor character, Thomas Harper.  Ryan uncovers a Russian plot to crash the U.S. economy with a terrorist attack.  Directed by Kenneth Branagh. (THOR)

I don’t have HBO but last month my cable company sent me a notice stating that I have HBO free for a month or so, the channel was already activated and OnDemand was also part of the deal.  I checked their schedule and learned I already have all those movies but I noticed all the episodes to True Detective were available.  Score!  I heard fantastic things about the show so Mrs. Gauntlet and I watched this and it was awesome!  And like all great shows it leaves you wanting more.  Matthew and Woody are at the top of their acting game in this as this show should clean up during the TV awards season next year.  Louisiana is marvelous backdrop for this eerie story.

This is a wild and fun ride as action man Liam Neeson stars as an air marshal who must spring into action during a transatlantic flight after receiving a series of text messages that put his fellow passengers at risk unless the airline transfers $150 million into an off-shore account.  This is a lot of fun and a nice who done it action flick.

This is another under-appreciated Eastwood flick from 1984.  Clint plays detective Wes Block who is tracking a serial killer that chooses victims who know or have had relations with Block.  Things get even more bizarre when Block’s daughters become involved and then it becomes a personal vendetta.  A great action crime drama that was directed by writer Richard Tuggle but indications are Clint was the man running this production.  Highly recommended.   Come on Warner Brothers, give us Bronco Billy on blu now!

Movie Poster Thursday-Sorcerer

New Release Tuesday

This was a great, intense, gritty war movie about a Navy Seal team set out on a mission to capture or kill notorious Taliban leader Ahmad Shah, in late June 2005. The team is left to fight for their lives in one of the most valiant efforts of modern warfare.  Fans are pretty split on this movie as the politics of the situation seem to interfere with their objective to sit down and enjoy a movie that is based on a true event.  Key word there being “based” which means some of this is true but most of it is not and we have given this the Hollywood treatment.  Highly Recommended.  Get this cool steelbook at Target but use cash so your credit card info will not be stolen.

Remakes and Reboots are the rage of late and I am cool with that, mostly.  But why take a classic like Paul Verhoeven’s Robocop and dumb it down and make it PG-13?  This production was doomed from the start as most, no let’s say all movie fans declared a Robobop remake unnecessary, especially if it is PG-13.  The original Robocop was and still is a violent, action masterpiece, why deviate from that?  Any way MGM pressed on and really stacked up the cast with Michael Keaton, Jackie Earle Haley, Gary Oldman, and Samuel L. Jackson or was that Laurence Fishburne?  Anyway the cast was great except for Robocop himself.  Joel Kinnamman is no Peter Weller as his Robocop is not very memorable and is very stiff in the suit.  Weller had great movements and a very cool way to walk in the suit (I did this walk in the hall ways in high school) as this new dude really is the tin man.  I also do not care for the look of the new Robocop either.  Why did he have to look like Batman?  He should have kept the silver look.  Now this movie is not as bad as advertised but it is very hollow compared to the old one with zero sarcasm which is what made the original Robocop so good.  Worth a rental, creep.  Also, why no unrated cut for blu ray?

A very popular western series from the 60s about a cattle drive that ran into new escapades every week.  For the final season the second in command is the now the head ramrod.  Still need to check and see if this actor did any more work after the show, his name is no where on the cover here.
