New Release Tuesday

Sucker Punch- I like all of Zach Snyder's films so far especially his remake of Dawn of the Dead.  This flick seemed to receive little fanfare upon its release and and did not even make back its budget but that did not stop Warners and Christopher Nolan from selecting Snyder for directing duties on Superman: Man of Steel.  This movie seems to have a lot of girl power and lives up to Snyder's other works visually.

Season of the Witch-  I don't know why I want to see this.  Is it to see how crazy Nick Cage gets or just to see how silly a sword movie can be.  Oh, well I think it is because Ron Perlman is in it so that will serve as my gap until Sons of Anarchy Season Four starts in September.

Still on Dexter Season 2 and started True Blood Season 3.

The Rangers lost 2 of 3 to the Mets?  And are still in first place?  They need to play some better ball and win series and they will be just fine.  Elvis is out with a wrist injury so the infield defense just took a big hit.  There is not much of a trade market right now because there are alot of teams that think they are still in the race and with declining attendance in many places no team wants to hoist the white flag and let the fans know they give up.  Not yet any way.

Sons of Anarchy Season 3

Wrapped up season 3 of Samcro recently and I cannot wait until September to get the new season rolling.  Samcro got everything cleaned up and are off to jail so it is exciting to see where the show goes with this.  All indications are they will be getting back to the Hamlet portion of the show like in the end of season 1 and part of season 2 as Jax has received some letters from his dad's Irish mistress to provide him some more insight of his dad's death.  Much stands to be uncovered here as his Mom and Clay may have been involved.  Glad Opie got some much needed revenge at the end of the show.

Put The Expendables back in the box!

Sly is taking it easier on The Expendables 2 and has selected director Simon West to take the director's chair for this big action sequel.  West started off his career great with Con Air, The Generals Daughter, and Tomb Raider but shifted to TV work more recently but did steer the recent Jason Statham remake of The Mechanic.  But let's not kid ourselves, Sly is running the show here.  Sly starts filming Headshot this coming week and The Expendables 2 in September.  Both are lensing in New Orleans.

New Release Tuesday

This week a couple of new flicks come out that look quite entertaining and have nice reviews to back them up.

The Adjustment Bureau- The always solid Matt Damon and Emily Blunt lead the way in this Inception inspired looking thriller.
Unknown-  Liam Neeson continues on his string of good actions movies.  I was shocked on how good he was in Taken and the in the much under appreciated A-Team movie.  There has been talk of a Taken sequel in the works so let's hope that happens since the great Luc Busson is producing.

Still on Dexter Season 2.  The FBI is hot on Dexter's trail.

The Rangers continue to cling on to their West lead and playing the Astros will always help that and now they get to face the very bad New York Mets in inter-league play this weekend.  The Feliz closer situation is starting to affect this team and it's June so time to start shopping for some bullpen help.

New Release Tuesday

This week is a little more lower key than last week but there
could be some entertaining flicks here plus some Steve
McQueen gold.

Battle: Los Angeles- Aliens and humans getting blown up all over the place cannot be that bad.  This movie came and went quietly so we'll just have to watch and see what it is all about.  Aaron Eckhart is the lead in this but does not even get his name on the cover.  That never bodes well for the star.

The Cincinnati Kid- The late, great Steve McQueen was really coming into his own and this movie started a string of hits for the King of Cool.  McQueen plays a great young card player that makes his way up the ranks and has an epic showdown with the best in the game in New Orleans.  Great roll for McQueen and a nice supporting cast with Kark Malden, Tuesday Weld, and the beautiful Ann Margret.

Finished Sons of Anarchy season 3 and Jax and the gang have cleaned everything up so it will be interesting to see where the show goes come September.  Good stuff.

The Rangers are 1-4 on the start of this road trip so far and play the Evil Empire Yankees tonight so hopefully they can back on track against them.

New Release Tuesday

I will announce that today is the best release day of the year.  We have my favorite movie of all time, some classic Clint, and last year's best movie too.

Outlaw Josey Wales- Clint had already directed a handful of movies up until now but this is where he really came into his own and crafted what many people say is his best work.  Clint's family is murdered by renegade soldiers and he then goes to fight in the Civil War.  The war ends but Clint still has some unfinished business of avenging his family against those soldiers.  A true classic.
"Dyin' ain't much of a living boy."
Every Which Way But Loose/ Any Which Way You Can- I love these double sets from Warner's, bravo to you.  Clint switched gears a bit in the late 70s and wanted to try something different.  Everyone advised against it but you do not tell Clint what to do and Every Which Way became his largest grossing movie at the time.  Clint plays Philo Beddoe who is a truck driver by day and a bare knuckle fist fighter at night.  Philo is climbing his way up the ranks but gets side tracked by a girl, Sondra Locke at that.  The girl takes off and Philo sets off after her and it leads to quite an  adventure.  Great supporting cast of Eastwood regulars here along with the orangutan and you know what?  The movie is really funny.  "Are those guys coming after me? Those guys are coming AFTER me!"

Finally the Cones make a Western!  I hope they make some more because they do not get much better then this.  A remake of the John Wayne classic but it adheres to the novel much more as a very intelligent young girl's father is murdered by a drifter ranch hand and she sets out for revenge.  She recruits the services of Marshal Rooster Cogburn because she likes the that he is more of a bring them back dead instead of alive type of Marshal.  They get some assistance from Texas Ranger Matt Damon as he was already on the trail of the killer from Texas.  Fantastic movie and and the the young Hailee Sreinfeld steals the show. Mattie Ross: "But we promised to bury the poor soul inside!"
Rooster Cogburn: "Ground's too hard. Them men wanted a decent burial, they should have got themselves killed in summer."

Firefox /Heartbreak Ridge- Clint plays a air force spy that must enter Russia and steal their top secret plane.  A bit of a stretch for Clint on this one but enjoyable non the less.

Clint plays Gunnery Sergeant Tom Highway who is a Marine at the end of his career and goes back to the town where he started his career and make amends with his ex-wife.  Classic role and great action movie. " It means: Be advised. I'm mean, nasty and tired. I eat concertina wire and piss napalm and I can put a round in a flea's ass at 200 meters. So why don't you go hump somebody else's leg, mutt face, before I push yours in."

Still on Dexter 2 and Samcro 3.  The Rangers have been playing better of late as they are up 2.5 games right now.  Nice pitching except for the last two games.

Friday Night Videos

Sadly I do not think Dirty Harry will be back.  Hope you enjoyed Eastwood week.

R.I.P. James Arness

James Arness of Gunsmoke passed away today at 88.  I was brought up on Gunsmoke and always enjoyed the show as a youngster and will watch it occasionally today on TV Land.  He played Marshall Matt Dillon for 20 years and also starred in several movies and made for TV productions.  Only Kelsey Grammer played a character longer with Frasier Crane.  He made quite of few movies for and with John Wayne and his Batjac productions.  When Gunsmoke was gearing up for production CBS wanted John Wayne for the role but he passed and recommended Arness.  Arness also has had a cult following in the Howard Hawks' classic 1951 monster movie the The Thing and the giant ant movie THEM.  People seem to forget that James Arness also had a famous brother in Peter Graves.  Rest in Peace Marshall and may Gunsmoke live forever.

Dirty Harry?

This was really close to happening.  Good thing it didn't.

New Release Tuesday

This week we have the return of HBO's vampire fest and some classic Duke turns blu along with some early Lucas.

True Blood Season 3- I discovered this show late last year and went thru the first two seasons very fast.  The way each episode ended just made you keep watching more and that is what is great about watching these on discs.  Sookie and the gang just defeated the big bad monster and now her new vampire fiance Bill has gone missing.  What's in store for the Louisiana crew?  Subtle hints of Werewolves were dropped last season and this cover seems to confirm that.

Big Jake- I grew up on John Wayne movies and I was always was quite fond of this one because it was action packed.  A group kidnaps the Duke's grandson so he and his sons have to go get him back.  Don't mess with the Duke.  Good stuff and you will enjoy a motorcycle in a Western movie here.

American Graffiti-  George Lucas's first big studio movie after THX 1138.  Set in the 50's with great cars, music, and an up and coming cast of Richard Dreyfuss, Ron Howard, Wolfman Jack, Cindy Williams, and some young guy named Harrison Ford.  It has been awhile since I have visited this so it may get a spin.

Still on Sons of Anarchy season 3 and Dexter season 2.  Samcro is off to Belfast to get Able back.

Next week looks like the release day of the year as we get the Coen's True Grit and some classic Clint on blu!
