Spring Break

In Texas, we skipped winter all together this year and went right into spring.  The weather is great, baseball is right around the corner, and I've got the fever.  Life is good.  Lawn mowing and car washing started this past weekend and man does it feel great to be outside.  We started this past weekend by checking out some garage sales, going to the boy's soccer game, and driving around listening to some Sheryl Crow.  Good times.  My break means no new releases this week and when I did check the Chipmunks lead all new releases so it is a bad week for them.

The Rangers are wrapping up spring training and still have not got themselves a reliable backup infielder so it is welcome new to see that Andres Blanco got optioned by the Nationals.   Andres did a fine job here the last two years but a bad back sidelined him the last part of the season so I bet the Rangers will be checking in with him.

New Release Tuesday

American remake with one of the greatest directors working today, David Fincher.  I do not know alot about this flick heading into it and that is the way I want it.  I enjoy all of Fincher's work even Alien 3.  Kudos to the studio for letting Fincher stick with the dark subject and putting his version on the screen and not making him clean it up for the big screen.

Remake from the BBC late seventies mini series with the late Sir Alec Guiness.  One of the movies from the awards movie season I have been looking forward to seeing the most.  I really wanted Gary Oldman to win the best actor trophy for this role and was shocked when Oscar noms came out and realized this was his first nomination.

We caught this in the theater and the parents enjoyed this more then the kids.  Nice trip back to my kid hood watching all the Muppets reunite on the big screen again.  I loved Chris Cooper in this, not at all a role you would expect him in and that was surprising.  Maniacal laugh... maniacal laugh...

I am beginning to worry about Rangers closer Joe Nathan.  He has not looked good so far and today we hear Feliz left early with a shoulder strain.   Contenders do not head into the season with closer issues.

AMC's the Walking Dead season 2 wrapped up this past Sunday to a very fulfilling finale.  The group had to move on from the farm as it was taken over by zombies.  Rick has claimed himself dictator as he finally disclosed what the CDC told him last season.  The group moves on to look for a new pad as there is a Shawshank looking place nearby.

FX's Justified continues tonight as Raylan and the Carpetbagger look to square off OK Corral style.

New Release Tuesday

Ms. Gauntlet would love to be Ms. Clooney so this is on her required watching list.  I get it, she's got George and I've got Clint.  Anyway, this is about a man connecting back to his family after his wife is injured in a boating accident and he learns some other things along the way.

Reporter Tintin and Captain Haddock set off on a treasure hunt for a sunken ship commanded by Haddock's ancestor.  Nice looking flick for the whole family.

About the legendary Marilyn Monroe who goes to London to film a movie as a worker on the film gets to know the real Marilyn, not the bubble headed bleach blonde on the big screen.

Two sisters find their already strained relationship challenged as a mysterious new planet threatens to collide with the Earth.   Arty looking film but the end of the world thing has me intrigued.

Rangers spring training keeps on keeping on and so far it is a quiet camp and that is a good thing.  Has any Ranger team ever had this much pitching depth?

The Walking Dead is down to the season finale for next week as the show took another big hit this week and we are also learning you do not have to be bit by a zombie to change after you die.

On Justified Raylan is giving the bad guys a taste of their own medicine by playing them against each other to root them all out.  I am starting to think Limehouse is the main baddie to watch out for.

Super Clint

R.I.P. Blockbuster Stores

I have been a loyal Blockbuster customer for over twenty years through all their bad customer service and change over the years.  I have never needed much assistance there because I usually know what I want there.  Back in the day video tapes lined all the walls and they claimed they had over 10,000 movies there.  Looking around the store was half the fun and reading the back of the video boxes was the special feature back then.

Blockbuster has had bad management and did not adapt over the years and filed for bankruptcy and eventually was sold to Dish Network to stay alive.  Ever hear the story that before Netflix started that the idea was taken to Blockbuster but they rejected it because they believed people would not want to rent by mail?  That move proved to be their ruination.

Since Dish took over they are closing stores so the deals there have been plentiful lately.  Dish started out by trying to move inventory with a blu ray blow out selling previously viewed blus 5 for $20.  My recent visits to the closing stores have yielded $1.99 dvds and $2.99 blus.  I will pay these stores another visit before the doors are shut for good.

I am not a downloading/streaming kind of guy because I have tried it a few times and I am not satisfied with the service yet but perhaps it will be better in the future.  I use to rent by Blockbuster online to do my movie watching at home but I stopped using that recently because I discovered another way to get physical dvds:

Redbox has it going on for a little over $1 a day.  Their only limitation is that they pretty much only rent new releases but that will please my cinema appetite.  For now.

So stop by your local Blockbuster store that is closing and see what deals you can score on some physical media.

New Release Tuesday

I still have not forgiven HBO for canceling Deadwood but I have bought into the hype of this show of swords, blood, violence, and boobs.  I will never subscribe to HBO again but I will still pick up an occasional show.

One of the best comedies ever?  Maybe but it has been a long while since I visited this so when I read about its pending release last year I have been holding out so this will be watched soon.  "Go and boil your bottoms, you sons of silly persons!"

I have been in a Hitchcock mood lately so I am glad these have been coming out at a good pace lately.  Now we need The Birds and Vertigo to come out.

I did not hear much about this upon release but I am interested in checking out the new Man of Steel in this 300 looking knock off.

Rangers spring training is in full swing now as real games have begun and Yu will make his first start tomorrow.  Things are starting nice so far as the Rangers are looking for some young guys to step up and claim a lefty spot in the bullpen and a reserve infielder spot on the bench.

We lost major character on Walking Dead this week as some say the group has lost their moral compass.  Only 2 episodes left this season.  Check out AMC's Comic Book Men right after the dead especially if your are a fan of director Kevin Smith.  Nice show, kind of like Pawn Stars for comic geeks.

On Justified tonight Raylan appears to be in some trouble as it looks like he is set up for murder.
