John Carpenter at The Alamo!

The great John Carpenter is in town next week for Texas Frightmare and is coming to The Alamo for a couple of Q and A sessions for showings of The Thing and They Live.  I have not been able to score concert tickets to any good shows lately because BOTs buy them all but I was able to score tickets to The Thing somehow.  According to Carpenter's Instagram these sold out within minutes, so I am glad I was able to procure some.  I have not done Texas Frightmare yet, that just seems like a giant money suck right now so this is the next best thing for me.  I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Carpenter on his last music tour so I have pics and autographs already.  The plus here is my son gets to go with me so this will be a fun evening.

New Release Tuesday

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Qiantumania- Scott Lang and Hope Van Dyne are dragged into the Quantum Realm, along with Hope's parents and Scott's daughter Cassie. Together they must find a way to escape, but what secrets is Hope's mother hiding? And who is the mysterious Kang.  My son is a harsh movie critic and told me to not waste my time so I have not bothered with this especially since Black Panther 2 was so bad.  I will probably get around to this some time on Disney+.  It’s a good thing Guardians Volume 3 was awesome or Marvel might have lost me for awhile.

Max Fleischer’s Superman - These 17 animated theatrical shorts were the first to launch Superman from comic books to the screen. The pioneering animated adventures feature the Man of Steel battling mad scientists and giant robots, thwarting the Nazis and saving headstrong reporter Lois Lane.  I enjoy all of Warners older superhero blu releases but the technical reviews on this are awful.  Apparently the WB scrubbed this too hard so there is no grain from a 1940s animated release.  Ridiculous, if you are going to take the time to remaster it at least do it the correct way.  Also it appears these episodes may have been updated to be more PC for today’s wusses.  Buyer beware.

Targets- An aging horror star questions his place in modern Hollywood, while a disturbed young man goes on a killing spree.  I have become a big Boris Karloff fan over the years and this is one title that has been out of print for awhile so I am thrilled that Criterion is releasing this finally.  I cannot wait to give this a spin.

LA Wars- A trigger-happy ex-cop goes undercover in a mafia organization under the guise of protecting the crime boss's daughter from a new rival, which ignites a bloody war on the streets of L.A.  Ah, good ol’ 90s straight to DVD action goodness.

Stale Popcorn and Sticky Floors- Take a seat as we sit down to chat with some of the creators and stars of the best grindhouse films of the 1970s and 80s.  When you take that seat hopefully you do not stick to it either.  This is a cool looking doc on what is probably a lot of forgotten movies.
