They Got This

Early 2013 is shaping up nicely for action movies with the vets from the 80s.  In January Arnold is back from politics and cameos and leads the way in The Last Stand.  This a good looking movie for Arnold to get his action groove back on.

On February 1 Sly is back in Bullet to the Head as an assassin who teams up with a cop to take down an enemy they have in common.  This movie is getting some positive buzz after getting pushed back from its April 2012 release.  Director Walter Hill (48 Hours, The Long Riders) makes his long waited return to action movies finally.

And on Valentines Day Bruce Wills returns as detective John McClain in It's a Good Day to Die Hard or Die Hard 5 as I call it around my house.  McClain partners with his son in Russia to stop a nuclear  weapons heist.  Just what every father and son should do.  Now, how do I convince the wife to see this on Valentines?

I love these guys and I am glad they are still making action movies.  I fear the future of the action star after these guys have to hang it up.  On a making of feature on the Expendables while Sly was working on casting he mentioned that all these guys trying out for the movie were always looking in the mirror and were more worried about their hair more then learning how to take a punch.  Now that is scary.

TRON the 3rd

Disney has finally decided to put some more quarters in the machine and move forward with another TRON movie.  Star Garret Hedlund from TRON Legacy returns as Sam Flynn as does director Joseph Kosinski.  There is not much word on a story yet as the script is still being worked on but I bet it will look really cool and hopefully there is a little more to it this time.  I got next game!

A Christmas Message from Batman

Movie Poster Wednesday- Christmas Vacation

New Release Tuesday

The sleeper hit of the summer and from what I read "One of the funniest movies of all time!"  Seth McFarland is a freakin genius.  Family Guy and now this.  I have already had fun with this title as an older lady at Wal Mart was checking me out (not me,the movie) and goes, "Oh, that looks cute.  Me:  "Uh, not sure you would like this."

Universal really wanted to get every penny out of this franchise since Matt Damon bowed out and this flick turned out quite good and will probably continue.  Great spy action flick.

It's about time this came out on blu.  Star and director Warren Beatty turned out a really good comic book movie way before they were so main stream.  Great cinematography and colors and the cast!   The cast!  Al Pacino, Madonna, William Forsythe, Kathy Bates, Dick Van Dyke, Dustin Hoffman, James Cann, snd the great Henry Silva.

I remember this late 70s action flick to be quite good and just look at who is involved.  Roger Moore was at his 007 height at this time.  I look forward to this.

Batman Can Impress

Movie Poster Wednesday-Love Actually

New Release Tuesday

I love Batman and this was a fitting conclusion to Christopher Nolan's Batman Trilogy.  I would have liked a little more Batman in a Batman movie but the story was so compelling I made do without.  I will keep this spoiler free but I am not liking what I am hearing about the new JLA movie and what they may do with Batman.

A new horror anthology that has been getting some good press and hype this year.  Let's hope it is good as they say and a segment is directed by Ti West (House of the Devil, The Innkeepers) a director that done some good work so far in his career.  A sequel to this is already in the works and is appropriately called S-VHS.

Classic Christmas Horror finally gets a DVD re-release.  Out of print copies of this have been going for $100 on ebay.  A kid goes a little nuts on some people on you guessed it, Christmas.

Anchor Bay has granted us a Christmas miracle in remaking Silent Night, Deadly Night.  Stars Malcom Mcdowell (A Clockwork Orange, Rob Zombie's Halloween) as the Sheriff hunting down a really bad Santa!

Chuck TP

Expendables 3 is a Go!

Well The Espendables 2 cleared over 300 million worldwide so of course another is on the way.  The cast wishlist is already being mulled over and requests are being made with the guys above leading the way.  I thought fat Steve Segal was on this list but bad blood between him and one of the producers will probably always keep him out.  Man, a small scene with Clint sure would be great!  Anyway, I believe Nick Cage probably has the best chances of being in the next one as he does just about anything for a paycheck and I am not sure Wesley Snipes is out of jail.  I am hoping General Solo is busy doing a certain Disney movie when this gets rolling.

Grumpy Old Expendables

Movie Poster Wednesday- The Enforcer

New Release Tuesday

Here is the catch up for the last two weeks.

I liked this a lot but it was a little off compared to the first one for me.  Maybe it was Sly stepping down from directorial duties and I definitely missed Mickey Rourke as Tool in this one.  This is a big time action flick with all the 80s greats and the movie is fun and tries not to be anything else.  There are quite a few old man jokes here and rightfully so because there are a couple of guys here eligible for social security.  Great to see Chuck Norris back on the big screen and hopefully he can be convinced to come back for the confirmed Expendables 3: The War Against Arthritis.

This is still considered one of the biggest box office bombs of all time.  Director Michael Cimino was hot off the success of Thunderbolt and Lightfoot and The Deer Hunter so he had free reign on this epic turn of the century western.  The budget started at 12 million and ballooned to 44 million and cleared over a whopping 3 million at the box office!  Maybe after this spectacular Criterion blu ray release this flim may get into the black.

Set in a Depression era Virginia a group of bootleggers has to fight off some new law to keep their healthy profits.  I am in on anything with Tom Hardy

Really Will?  You did this instead of Django Unchained?  I might watch this one of these days only for Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin seems to do a nice Jones impression.

Skyfall

I never miss a Bond movie on opening weekend with my best bud and this past weekend was no exception.  James Bond has been away for 4 years and that it was way too long especially when we were left with the bad taste of 'Quantum of Solace'.  Not that Quantum was that bad, plenty of ass kicking and chases but not much story.  Skyfall makes up for that.

Skyfall returns Bond to his roots after rebooting with the fabulous 'Casino Royale'.  Some old characters are brought back along with some old props and get this:  This is a spy movie with spy stuff!  And a great villain too in Javier Bardem.  This guy could be up for another Oscar as the baddie in this movie and he takes Bond where other no other evil bad guy has ever taken Bond before.  We are even reminded that 007 is an orphan as I believe that fact has been lost over the years.  Maybe in the next pic we can be reminded that 007 is a commander in the British navy.

Another great thing about this flick is that it is not about an evil man holding the world ransom with a laser or nuclear weapons.  It is all about revenge, pure and simple.  Highly recommended, Bond is definitely back.

Also, the new song by Adele is fantastic!  I proclaim it in the top 3 of all time Bond songs.

1. Live and Let Die- Sir Paul McCartney
2. A View to a Kill- Duran Duran
3. Skyfall- Adele

All Brits.  How about that!

Movie Poster Wednesday- The Beguiled

New Release Tuesday

Pixar's newest flick looks pretty good and it has plenty of girl power in it.  Plenty of girl power at my house to pick this one up.  This particular title is in a ton of Black Friday ads next week for $10!

Time for some self disclosure here: I am not sure if I have seen this or not.  I seem to recall a viewing on TV when I was really young but that could have  been another desert movie.  I have always heard this movie is only meant to be seen on the big screen but the one at my house will have to do this time.

I will stress again as I have many times on  this blog. A movie with Ben Stiller  is a big turd.

The Warner Archive Collection dug up some of my childhood goodness this week.  California Highway Patrolmen Jon Baker and Frank Poncherello return to stop a car chop shop operation.  Hope it still has the cool theme.

Friday Night Videos- The Last Stand

Holy Shirt!

Grudge Match

Sly is going to try comedy and climb in the ring once again in Grudge Match ala "Grumpy Ol' Boxers".  Robert Deniro costars with Sly as two aging boxers plan one final fight against each other.  I think this will be a nice break from all the action films Sly has been doing lately, it's with Warner Brothers, and it has a nice cast. Also stars Kim Basinger and Alan Arkin.  Filming starts early next year in Louisiana.

"Sly, you're gonna kick my ass!"

Movie Poster Wednesday- Skyfall

New Release Tuesday

Director John Carpenter returned to his low budget movie making ways and created this great sci-fi cult classic.  This stars wrestling great Rowdy Roddy Piper in a great turn as a guy down on his luck as he discovers some sunglasses that let him see what is really going on around him.  This is based on Reaganomics of the late 80s where commercials, ads, and labels had subliminal messages.  Contains what most say is the longest fight scene on film ever.  "I've come here to kick ass and chew bubblegum and I am all out of bubblegum."  Nice job by Scream Factory once again.

Fat Steven Seagal and Stone Cold Steve Austin star in this action thriller that I have been reading good things about.  I read a long time ago this might be going theatrical but I guess fat Steve could not sell it so DTV this is.  Still looking forward to it.

This was director John Carpenter's USC film school film.  It was regarded so well he got some additional funds to add to it and got a theatrical release.  Co-written and stars the late great Dan O'Bannon.  (Alien)
