Junk Food Dinner

I will admit I have never listened to a podcast but I came across many recommendations for Junk Food Dinner from quite a few movie sites and blogs earlier this year and decided to give it a go.  I must admit I am now hooked and look forward to the weekly show from Kevin, Parker, and Shawn.

These boys put on a good show as they discuss new movie projects and complain about remakes in Nerd News, go over the week's new DVD and blu ray releases, then discuss three cult movies from the past.  It is really good stuff and these guys are nearing show 200.  I had a chance to listen to quite a few of them this past summer and have cleared about half of the catalog as of now.  Go to iTunes and look them up and get a subscription or go visit their website to select a show at Junk Food Dinner
Enjoy!

New Release Tuesdays

Sorry, I have been busy and lazy towards the new releases lately.  There have been some solid releases recently so check them out in order of newest to oldest:

Red was a great action comedy with some aging stars ala The Expendables but a lot funnier.  I'm not sure if it warranted a sequel but I am going to going to give it a shot.

I have not seen one episode of this show but I am going to give it a go soon as I have heard great things about it.  I already have the first two seasons so I will not be indulging in this awesome looking box set.

I vividly recall this box art from the video rental stores of the past but never got the chance to see it.  And even better it is from the Zombie master himself George A. Romero!  This comes from SHOUT  FACTORY so it will be a solid release.

I love director Edgar Wright as he did some awesome flicks in Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.  This completes the trilogy as I look forward to some more greatness!

Not a bad looking generic action movie with Denzel and Marky Mark.  It cannot be that bad.

Eric Clapton went out on tour earlier this year as a guitar festival jam so this should be good.

SCREAM FACTORY brings us this 80s classic.  Man I have not seen this since my teenage years on Cinemax.

SCREAM FACTORY also brings us this John Carpenter classic.  This is Carpenter's homage to Howard Hawks' Rio Bravo as cops and bad guys are at siege in their own jail from a politically correct gang.  Great soundtrack and highly recommended.

This movie has caught much flack but not from this guy.  This thing desperately needed a reboot and I believe Zack Snyder did this franchise right and got it started nicely.  I loved that Russell Crowe's Jor-El was a bad ass, Michael Shannon as Zod, and Kevin Costner as Pa Kent.  I liked that everything you thought you knew about Superman was tossed out the window and new things are being created.  They have not even brought kryptonite into the equation as a weakness yet but I bet Batman does that in the sequel. This ran a little long and the end battle looked like a video game at times but I consider those minor gripes.  Bring on Superman vs Batman or whatever they are going to call it.

Not a bad summer animated flick.  Not great either.

This was Showtime's attempt at making their own Tales from the Crypt.  Horror master John Carpenter came on board, hosted and directed two episodes of this anthology and brought veteran horror master Tobe Hooper (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) with him for the third story.  A Showtime release, a Laserdisc release, and a VHS were the only ways this has been seen until SCREAM FACTORY dug up this little gem.  I used to have a VHS copy of this from the laserdisc of this and it is a fun little horror flick with some nice stars and cameos in it.  I will let that be a surprise.

New Release Tuesday

The second and better looking White House has been taken over movie this year.  Channing Tatum has done a really job in his last few flicks and is a good action guy.

Warner Archive brings us Batman: The Brave and the Bold season 1 to blu ray for the first time.  This is a funnier version of Batman and is good to sit and watch with the kids.

I still have not devoted the three hours to watch last year's prequel and now we have the extended version available.  I re-watched the original trilogy awhile back and I just kind of blah on these.  I am hoping starting from the beginning will enhance this over all story.

This drama takes place at Parkland Hospital in Dallas after JFK was assassinated and goes over the  chaotic events that took place. This has great looking cast with Billy Bob Thornton, Paul Giamatti, and Marcia Gay Harden.

Gravity

Gravity won the box office 3 weeks in a row which is a rarity these days and it has also scored much critical praise to go with all the receipts.  I had the opportunity to get out and go to the movies with my awesome bride so we decided to check this out and we even ponied up for the 3D IMAX tickets.  $14.50 each?  Yeah we're sneaking in candy!

Sandra Bullock and George Clooney play a medical engineer and an astronaut who are working in space when an accident destroys their space shuttle (I thought NASA was broke? Wait, that's the whole government) and they are sent adrift in space.  That is all I am saying about the plot.  This movie is 91 minutes long as it wastes no time and takes about 4 minutes to setup and then the turds start hitting the fan.

The movie tells you in writing in the beginning that there is no sound in space (an old trick borrowed from Alien, but that's OK) as that really adds to the intensiveness of this movie.  If it was not intense enough then the point of view switches to Bullock's point of view from her space suit as she is spinning out of control, is out of breath, and really puts you in the middle of the action.  Director Alfonso Cuaron has crafted a great sci-fi opera here as he really puts you in the movie and makes you cringe in your seat and constitutes you to figure a way out of this space mission gone awry.

Sandra Bullock and George Clooney are good as usual and play off each other really well.  Be sure to listen in on their Houston contact as he is a guy that has been in this position before.  Highly recommended.

New Release Tuesday

I thought the first movie was good but I really enjoyed this prequel as we learn how Mike and Sully met at school.  There is some really great college gags here and this was a lot of fun with the mismatched fraternity they join for the school competition.

This was one of the summer's biggest duds but it did look intriguing and that would be because of the great Jeff Bridges.  This really had a sci-fi kinda Big Trouble in Little China feel to it so it will warrant a rental first.
