New Release Last Tuesday

This is from director William Friedkin (The French Connection, The Exorcist) and was released in 1977 around the same time as Star Wars and just got lost in all the hoopla.  It is about group of outcasts from different backgrounds and nationalities are forced by misfortune to work in an oil-drilling operation in South America.  There has never been a good copy of this available on any home video format and Friedkin himself over saw the restoration of the film.  Current news has already surfaced that the blu ray is the best way to watch this as the DVD is apparently in the wrong aspect ratio.  Anyway cannot wait to pick this up and rediscover this movie.

I have never seen this original Brit version starring Michael Caine as his brother dies under mysterious circumstances in a car accident, London gangster Jack Carter travels to Newcastle to investigate.

Now I have seen this Sly version and was really underwhelmed more by the direction more than Sly himself.   He was pretty cool in this and we get a glimpse of The Expendables’ Barney Ross here with the goatee.  Sly takes the turn as Jack Carter here as he returns for the funeral of his brother Richie after a car crash during a storm to do an investigation of his own.   Sounds familiar…

This was a nice little action movie as it marked a bit of a return for Seagal as he trimmed down some, cut the pony tail, and was back in a modestly budgeted action movie.  Seagal plays Orin Boyd, a tough cop in an inner-city precinct that discovers a web of dirty cops and corruption.  This has producers Joel Silver’s stamp all over it.

New Release Tuesday

This has got to go down as the most awful release week of the year.  So let's take a look at movies I will probably never watch.

I think Ben Stiller has got a big bag of nothing and since this did not perform very well at the box office I think other movie fans are finally realizing that now too.  Pass.

This is the last Stiller I actual liked and I will throw Tropic Thunder in there but because of the other actors not the Still.  This movie was kind of cool 20 years ago but looking at it now I would just tell these people to get a life and a job.

If studios make a descent looking animated movie parents will take their kids and it will do well.  I think maybe we are getting too many of these now.

This was a nice follow up for Kevin Smith's Clerks and I have not see this in awhile and I also discovered I actually do not have this title. 

This is by far the best movie on the list this week.  This is a comedy from director Robert Zemeckis and stars the great Kurt Russell and is about the owner of a struggling used car lot that is killed, it's up to the lot's hot-shot salesman to save the property from falling into the hands of the owner's ruthless brother and used-car rival.  This is from Twilight and only 3000 copies are available so grab yours soon if you want it.  Ge it here: http://www1.screenarchives.com/title_detail.cfm/ID/26867/USED-CARS-1980/

As you can see around here there is much love for Sly and it was awesome to see him turn out three movies last year.  This was released during a very crowded Christmas time and it did not do well its opening weekend against The Hobbit 2 and critics wrote it off as a bomb.  It’s disappointing that any movie can be declared a financial failure within two days of its theatrical release as I think that may deter the average moviegoer from seeing something.  Anyway this was sold as a comedy (think Grumpy Old Boxers) but this is more of a drama with Alan Arkin and Kevin Hart providing some comic relief to it.  Sly and De Niro play off each other great and most of the training sequences show case De Niro more than Stallone I guess because we have been watching that for almost 40 years now.  Also stars the beautiful Kim Basinger and The Walking Dead’s Jon Bernthal.  Give this movie a spin; I think you will like it.

I still have not watched the first Hobbit so now I have six hours of Hobbit catching up to do sometime.  The first trilogy did not exactly blow my pants off so putting away three hours to watch the first prequel is being laborious.  I will get caught up some time.

A look at the lives of the strong-willed women of the Weston family, whose paths have diverged until a family crisis brings them back to the Oklahoma house they grew up in, and to the dysfunctional woman who raised them.  Features some great actresses so may give this a spin sometime.

Why not?  Just for the title alone.  Is Danny Trejo the hardest working man in Hollywood?  This guy comes out with a new DTV title every other week and I know he is in at least 2 TV series right now as well.  

The first one sucked so I did not make the mistake of seeing the others, pass.
