The Hobbit Trailer

Movie Poster Wednesday

New Release Tuesday

Move over Family Guy FX's Archer has taken over as the best animated show on tv. Archer is a super spy working for ISIS that has to overcome obstacles that involves his work and his co-workers.  Season 1 was great and I look forward to finishing this before season 3 starts on January 19.  Highly recommended.

Dolph Lundgren continues his straight to dvd work in this unlikely sequel from director hack Uwe Boll.  Dolph has been doing some great work of late so I will give this one a shot.

Wrapped up American Horror Story and it turned out to be a nice show and pretty much all loose ends are tied up.  Word is they will be going with a new cast and setting for season 2.  AMC renewed Hell on Wheels so I need to get caught up on that.

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas as everyone here was blessed with another good one.

It is quiet on the Ranger front during the holidays but the Prince Fielder rumors persist and the Yu negotiations will begin soon.

I love these flicks where you look back on people or an event and you ask "What if?"  That is exactly the case here as Sam Shepard plays an elder Butch Cassidy that some how survived the blaze of glory he and the Sundance Kid supposedly went out on against what seemed to be the whole Bolivian army.  Apparently ol' Butch has the need for one more adventure in his life and we will see how it goes.

This movie got lost in the shuffle at the end of the summer run when everyone wanted to see The Help.  This is about two brothers who are MMA fighters that have to cross paths in their professional and personal lives.  Great job by the 3 lead actors Hardy, Edgerton, and Nolte.  Tom Hardy is quickly becoming a favorite with his work in Bronson, Inception, and the upcoming Dark Knight Rises and the new Mad Max movie.

I have not done muck TV watching with some traveling and holiday events so will get caught up soon.

The Rangers finally make a big splash by winning the bid to deal with Japanese pitcher Yu Darvish.  51.7 million was the winning bid in what I think is a good move by the team because it does not cost any players or draft picks only other people's money.

Coming Soon...

Dear Santa Clint,

I think I have been a good boy this year and I thought I would let you in on some things I have an interest in.

A collection from some of my favorite directors that includes one of my favorite comedies in Raising Arizona.

One of the big summer movies that under performed at the box office but reviews were kind and with a title like that what is not to like.

Probably not considered a classic but it was John Belushi's last movie and I have fond memories of this dark comedy and it is finally available on Universal's movie on demand program.

I am not a huge fan of the other monkey movies but read really good things on this prequel and the special effects look great.

The band's last album.  For now.

A new book of yours with a collection of art work from A Fistful of dollars to Gran Torino.

Santa Clint,

Bring them all, bring some, or none at all because things are going great and I am grateful either way.  Thanks and Merry Christmas.  When you stop there should be chili in the fridge if you are tired of cookies but don't touch my beer.

New Expendables 2 Trailer

Movie Poster Wednesday

New Release Tuesday

Jack Black and the gang return in this animated adventure sequel from DreamWorks.  I hold the first movie in high regards and I hear good things about this follow-up.

I have not visited this in awhile but remember good things about this Disney feature as they tried to capitalize on the Batman phenomenon at the time.  Director Joe Johnston did a great job on his second feature here and really did a good job at capturing the 40s look and did so again this past summer with Captain America.

Another 80s horror remake but this one actually scored some good reviews so I will have to check this one out.  I revisited the original recently and enjoyed it a lot.  I like the fact that the cross did not work against Vampires unless you believed in it.

Last years best action movie gets a Sly director's cut with an additional 11 minutes of footage and some new extras as well.  I watched this last night and I must say I prefer this version because it has lot more heart and you really get to know the characters better here too.  Dolph Lundgren and Terry Crews get some more screen time here and I like the score on this take better also.  It has a new opening sequence that is really cool as the new music makes these guys a little more mysterious.  I highly recommend the behind the scenes documentary Inferno that follows Sly during the making of this and man does he take a beating.

Sons of Anarchy season 4 wrapped and the gang is all cool with Jax leading the way and Clay managed to survive.  American Horror Story is coming close to end and went a little Sixth Sense on us last week but I kinda saw it coming.  Justified cannot get here soon enough.  I am catching up on Archer right now and I am really liking it.  It could end up being my favorite animated show going right now.

White Elephant

Every year we get together with the church group to celebrate and worship.  We change it up every year and do something a little different each time and this year we chose to do the white elephant gift exchange or aka bring junk from home to exchange for someone else's junk.  I think we scored the most original gift this year by choosing this basketball that has Happy Meal toys glued to it.  Batman, Avatar, Chipmunks, Rio, Puss in Butts, and so many more adorn this thing.  My boy said "That is an awesome basketball."  Props to my good buddy W.H. for his great gift.  Now let's see how long this thing will stay together.

A movie with a title like that has to be liked around here.  Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford lead the cast in this alien invasion that takes place in the old west and was directed by Jon Favreau (Iron Man).  This is the best looking thing Ford has done in quite awhile.

One of the great wars movies of all time.  There is no love triangle here, just real action and plane sequences.  It has been quite a long time since I visited this flick.

The first was one was serviceable enough but I am not sure how these go down as some of the best comedies ever because I do not think these stand up to any of the greats from the seventies or eighties.  It is worth a rental.

The year's best chick flick based on a popular book.  The bride wanted it and I am in because I think Emma Stone is about the best thing out there of all the young actresses.

Baseball's Winter Meetings start this week here in the Big D and there should be some big moves beginning this week.  The Rangers have their hands in many deals and they are not resting because they know the time to win is now.

Sons of Anarchy wraps up tonight and I have no idea what is coming down so it should be good.  AMC's Hell on Wheels is going and while it is no Deadwood I am really liking the show so far, it has has some great characters.  Besides, I am always a sucker for westerns.

R.I.P. Bill Mckinney 1932-2011

It has been a tough year for characters actors.  Roberts Blossom, Charles Napier, and now Bill McKinney.  McKinney was mostly known for his hillbilly character from Deliverance that was on the giving end of a straight man's worst nightmare.  He was also known for First Blood, The Green Mile, The Shootist, and of course numerous Clint Eastwood movies.   McKinney got his start in TV and made his way into the movies doing small parts but it was in 1974 where he had a small role in Clint Eastwood's Thunderbolt and Lightfoot that forged a relationship with Clint that went on for seven more movies.  McKinney was selected by Clint for his biggest role in The Outlaw Josey Wales as the baddie, Terrill "Red Legs".  McKinney was a fine character with a great booming voice with over 110 movie and TV roles.  My favorite role of his besides Terrill of course is Dallas in the Every Which Way movies.  In the second flick he has a line where the whole biker gang is in their clubhouse.  A guy gets up and yells something, runs off and Dallas' response is "He's baking brownies."

Not a hard man to track. Leaves dead men wherever he goes.

Heisman?

Robert Griffin III or RG3 as he is known around here is Baylor's quarterback and resident Superman as the guy is already working on his Master's degree, in thinking about running track in the next Olympics, and wants to go to law school after all of that.  He has lead Baylor to a 9-3 record with some impressive wins against some big teams and has completed over 72% of his passes with 36 touchdowns passes and only 6 interceptions along with 9 rushing touchdowns.  He is an all around good guy and I wish him the best of luck at bringing home that trophy on Saturday.

I have read good things about this horror comedy.  It is the comedy comparison of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre as Shaun of the Dead was to Night of the Living Dead.

A frozen monster is discovered in Manchuria and is being brought home via train where things get hairy in this early 70s horror greatness.  Stars the fantastic trio of Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, and Telly Savalas.

1 episode of Sons of Anarchy left this season and Clay is still around so far and Jax is now left to handle the deal between the Irish and the cartel.  Jax has also been told a partial truth of who killed his dad so it is going to be a great finale.  Walking Dead Season 2 part 1 is complete and what an ending.  I did not see that coming at all but I should have expected from this show where anyone could die in any episode.

Rocky vs. All

New Release Tuesday

One of the sleepers of the summer.  A group of kids are making a movie during the late 70s on their summer break and one night during filming they find themselves in the midst of a train wreck that leads to much mystery in a small town.  Nice work from director J.J. Abrams that reminds you of Close Encounters of the Third Kind and The Goonies.

This goes down as one of the biggest bombs of the summer in a unnecessary remake that should have not been made especially when Arnold asked the producers to wait for him to finish his term as governor of California.  Original Conan director John Milius has had a King Conan script ready for sometime and Arnold wanted this to be his return to the movies.  Director Marcus Nispel is turning out to be quite a hack that is all eye candy with no substance.

Sons of Anarchy marches on towards the season finale as Clay may have put down this week as Opie found Piney's body and has finally felt Clay's betrayal for the death of his wife and father.  The big deal with Samcro, the Irish. and the cartel is on the verge so it will be cool to see what happens.  Missed last week on Walking Dead so I have some catching up to do.

The Rangers have started the off season with the signing of pitcher Joe Nathan.  He will fill the closer's role and Neftali Feliz will be moved to the starting rotation.  This also means the Rangers will let C.J. Wilson walk as they have offered arbitration and the Rangers will gladly accept draft picks once C.J. lands his new free agent deal.  I think this is a nice move and it helps keep the payroll down and gives them plenty of room to add a big free agent this winter..Prince Fielder anyone?

The great Bruce Campbell stars in this cult classic as Ash who is a guy that goes out to the woods and opens a book and all hell breaks loose.  A then nobody named Sam Raimi directed this and he has come along way since then.  Remake talk has been going on about this franchise and it just would not be the same without Campbell.

I had to mention one of my favorite bands since they recently hung it up and this is their last album.  For now.  Give it a spin and hear some of their greatest.

Sons of Anarchy continues and Clay seems destined for doom.  I am waiting for show runner Kurt Sutter to inject something special and unexpected soon.  American Horror Story is getting really good as we continue to learn the back stories of all the previous home owners and Jessica Lange continues to steal the show.

The Rangers have not made any moves this off-season but did acquire a new division mate in the Astros as their sale was completed and they will make the move to the American league.
