New Release Tuesdays

I have been on Summer vacation as I got to enjoy some mountain time in Colorado and then come back to a mess of work-work and house and yard work.  And one of my TVs got knocked out by a thunderstorm so if you think I am always behind on watching stuff now I am really getting behind with one less TV.  Let’s take a look at some of the last few weeks of releases. 

Ready Player One- When the creator of a virtual reality world called the OASIS dies, he releases a video in which he challenges all OASIS users to find his Easter Egg, which will give the finder his fortune.  Nostalgia is all the rage right now and this pours out a ton that looks like the 80s.  This did good business but did not seem to be as big as anticipated, but the reviews are solid, and that Spielberg knows a thing or two about directing.

Supergirl- After losing a powerful orb, Kara, Superman's cousin, comes to Earth to retrieve it and instead finds herself up against a wicked witch.  I remember seeing this at the theater and even as a kid I had a hard time sitting thru this as I remember it was that bad.  This is the international cut on blu for the first time from Warner Archive so maybe it is better?  I am not sure if I will find out or not.  Maybe I will need an extra title when the Warners 4 for 44 sale comes in March.

In the Mouth of Madness- An insurance investigator begins discovering that the impact a horror writer's books have on his fans is more than inspirational. This maybe the last great John Carpenter movie.  I liked a lot back when it was released and I am still fond of it because it has some generally scary moments in it.  I already have this on blu but I love supporting Scream Factory so I will upgrade in he future.  Maybe I will put this on my Christmas list.

Memoirs of An Invisible Man- After a freak accident, a yuppie turns invisible and runs from a treacherous CIA official, while trying to cope with his new life.  I have read that this was a paycheck for Carpenter and a pretty good one since it was a studio film.  Chevy Chase was trying to do something different here and get away from comedy but was a pain in the ass to work with as is his well-documented reputation goes.  This movie bombed but has picked up some respect over the years for looking so good and the effects holding up well.  Maybe I will give it another spin soon.

Village of the Damned 1960- In the English village of Midwich, the blonde-haired, glowing-eyed children of uncertain paternity prove to have frightening powers.  I have been waiting for this to make the jump to blu and I am very glad I held out.  I almost picked up this DVD several times.  This is a great horror flick and the kids are really creepy.

Death of Superman- Superman battles against an insurmountable foe named Doomsday.  This is a retelling with the whole JLA involved this time as they all battle Doomsday and Superman dies.  Again.  And…

The Day After- The effects of a devastating nuclear holocaust on small-town residents of eastern Kansas.  I remember this being a huge TV event since we were in the cold war era and many feared it would come down to nuclear war.  I really do not remember much else about this so I will probably pick this up in the future.

Lowlife- The sordid lives of an addict, an ex-con, and a luchador collide when an organ harvesting caper goes very, very wrong.   I have read great things about this so I am gonna check it out soon.

Piranha 2- A scuba diving instructor, her biochemist boyfriend, and her police chief ex-husband try to link a series of bizarre deaths to a mutant strain of piranha fish whose lair is a sunken freighter ship off a Caribbean island resort.  This is the movie James Cameron wants you to forget.  Cameron is Roger Corman alumni and got his start working on many movies but this was the first he was credited as director but does not consider it as his since he was replaced during production.  It’s been along time since I have see this and that was the TV version and I always enjoy the Italian horror movies.

Star Wars Rebels: Season 4- A brave and clever ragtag starship crew stands up against the evil Empire as it tightens its grip on the galaxy and hunts down the last of the Jedi Knights. I am a season behind on this but this has been a good show and I am excited to see how they wrap it up.

Avengers Infinity War- The Avengers and their allies must be willing to sacrifice all in an attempt to defeat the powerful Thanos before his blitz of devastation and ruin puts an end to the universe.  This lived up to the hype and finished just the way I thought it would so now we all wait to see the conclusion.

Deadpool 2- Foul-mouthed mutant mercenary Wade Wilson (AKA. Deadpool), brings together a team of fellow mutant rogues to protect a young boy with supernatural abilities from the brutal, time-traveling cyborg, Cable.  Since this is rated R this is the only super hero movie I did not catch in the theater this year because I am a responsible parent and know what the ratings system means.  I am always amused the Monday after these two movies were released about parents outrage over the language, violence, etc…Again, see the rating.  The first one was a lot of fun so ready to spin this one.

Ash vs Evil Dead 3- This was the best comedy on TV the past few years and it is a damn shame it was cancelled.  Piracy again claims another victim as many decided to steal this instead of paying for a subscription to Starz or wait of the DVD or blu.  This should be sitting on my counter when I get home and I cannot wait to start watching the concluding adventures of Ash and his buddies.  Uh, my TV.  KAHNNNNNN!!!!!

Black Water- A deep cover operative awakens to find himself imprisoned in a CIA black site on a submarine.  This is probably not near as good as the last two Universal Soldier movies but I want to watch this even though this appears to be one cheap ass movie.
