New Release Tuesdays
I am letting this blog down by being lazy and taking off awhile for spring break. Physical media is getting slim around the store lately as Target and Wal Mart are shrinking those sections for books? Anyway, there is still plenty off good stuff out there. Let's see some of the last few weeks titles that are worth picking up:
Alligator- A pet baby alligator is flushed down a toilet and survives in the city sewers. 12 years later, it grows to an enormous size thanks to a diet of discarded laboratory dogs injected with growth hormones. Now, humans have entered the menu. This may be the release of the year. I first saw this on late night TV as a kid and absolutely loved it. It is about time this came to blu ray, I was getting tired of watching my crappy burned DVD of this classic flick. Have you ever noticed that Kane Hodder is uncredited as the alligator? Funny. Highly recommended.
American Underdog- The story of NFL MVP and Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner, who went from stocking shelves at a supermarket to becoming an American Football star. This is a nice looking uplifting, sports movie. I like that Shazam! guy.
Foul Play- A shy San Francisco librarian and a bumbling cop fall in love as they solve a crime involving albinos, dwarves, and the Catholic Church. I always enjoyed this comedy and this is back when Chey was relevant and not such a jerk to people.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife- When a single mom and her two kids arrive in a small town, they begin to discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind. I am going to confess here: I am not a big Ghostbusters fan. I will eventually get around to this one but I am in no big hurry. Busting does not make me feel good.
Slumber Party Massacre- A remake of the 1982 slasher film about sorority girls attacked by a maniac killer with a large electric drill. This remake is pretty good and of course the roles are reversed in this new one. This is a really good low budget flick, check it out.
Dead Lock- An ex-military man working at a Georgia power plant has to spring into action to prevent disaster when a group of rogue soldiers gain control of the plant and take the employees hostage. Oh boy. Bruce Willis was in 8 movies last year. 8. Now these are all DTV cash grabs where he films for a few days and has doubles do the rest of the work. I have not seen any of these but he is the baddie in this one so I am going to give it a spin. There are rumors out there that Bruno has early onset dementia and is doing whatever work he can before he cannot do it anymore. I hope these rumors are wrong, I was wanting one more John McClane outing.
The Batman- Billionaire Bruce Wayne fights crime and evil as the mysterious Batman. I enjoy all the Batman animated shows and really liked this one because it was different.
Nightmare Alley- A grifter working his way up from low-ranking carnival worker to lauded psychic medium matches wits with a psychiatrist bent on exposing him. This is from Guillermo Del Toro, one of my favorite directors. This is an interesting horror noir flick that must have been a passion project of his because of all the old noir movies he references. This is 2.5 hours long so make extra popcorn.
Red Rocket- Mikey Saber is a washed-up porn star who returns to his small Texas hometown, not that anyone really wants him back. This was one of the indie darlings of the year and I have read good things about it so I would like to spin this soon.
Matrix Resurrections- Return to a world of two realities: one, everyday life; the other, what lies behind it. To find out if his reality is a construct, to truly know himself, Mr. Anderson will have to choose to follow the white rabbit once more. Did anyone really want another one of these? The reaction to this is mixed at best so I will go in with caution. I am a completest so I am waiting for the price of this to go down before I pick this one up.
Dream a Little Dream- An accident puts the consciousness of an elderly dream researcher into the body of a bratty teenager. The problem? The kid prefers dreamworld limbo to real life. This is the only other Coreys movie I like besides The Lost Boys.
An obsessed fan stalks his favorite actors from the Friday the 13th films and beyond, mirroring his idol Jason Voorhees. This has potential because it has a lot of Friday the 13th alumni in it and it was directed by Part 5's Deborah Vorhees.
