New Release Tuesdays
Hey! Happy Summer to you. It is 104 here today. Anyway, on to cooler things. There has been some good stuff come out lately. Kudos to Target for having most of these on Tuesdays, even if it means I got the only copy left on the shelf. Wal-Mart, not so good. I wish I got a pic the other day. The new release endcap had two total blu rays on it. Two! Mr. Amazon man makes more and more stops to my house because you cannot find movies anywhere. With $5 a gallon gas now, thanks Joe, I guess it is ok to let Mr. Amazon bring me the goods more. On to the good stuff:
The Northman- From visionary director Robert Eggers comes The Northman, an action-filled epic that follows a young Viking prince on his quest to avenge his father's murder. I enjoyed Eggers first two movies that were very low budget compared to the big budget he got to work with here. This is visually stunning with some epic battle scenes. It has a fantastic soundtrack too!
Fortress: Sniper’s Eye- Story revolves around a top-secret resort for retired U.S. intelligence officers. Bruno is retired but had a lot of these DTV movies in the can. Apparently he shot Fortress and this one back to back but I have noticed Fortress 3 is no longer on his resume so I guess they did not get to that one. This is watchable but you can definitely tell Bruno was fed his lines and had a double in many of his scenes.
Killer Elite- Mike Locken, who works for a private security firm affiliated with the C.I.A., is betrayed by his partner and left apparently crippled for life. I have never seen this OG version but it’s got Robert Duvall in it and its is a 70s move so I am in!
Morbius- Biochemist Michael Morbius tries to cure himself of a rare blood disease, but he inadvertently infects himself with a form of vampirism instead. The pandemic caused this turkey to get pushed many times and they finally had to get it out to recoup some bucks. I am passing on this one for now.
Father Stu- Follows the life of Father Stuart Long, a boxer-turned-priest who inspired countless people during his journey from self-destruction to redemption. Marky Mark has been doing some good stuff lately so I will get around to checking this out some time.
Horse Soldiers- In 1863, a Union outfit is sent behind Confederate lines in Mississippi to destroy enemy railroads but a captive southern belle and the unit's doctor cause frictions within ranks. I like that they still release old John Wayne flicks. Hopefully they are still fans out there buying the Duke’s work.
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent- In this action-packed comedy, Nicolas Cage plays Nick Cage, channeling his iconic characters as he's caught between a superfan and a CIA agent. Nick Cage has been allowed to come back and play in a studio movie after years of DTV affair. His last 5 or 6 movies have been solid and he is not one to mail it in. Looking forward to spinning this new Cage flick.
Shaft- Cool black private eye John Shaft is hired by a crime lord to find and retrieve his kidnapped daughter. The mother of all blaxsploitation movies that has one of the best soundtracks ever. Glad Criterion got around to putting this one out.
