New Release Tuesday

Trick R Treat- Five Halloween stories: A principal has a secret life, a virgin is looking for her first time, a group of kids pull a prank, a woman who loathes Halloween does not respect the rules and a mean old man meets a demonic trick-or-treater.  This is the best Halloween anthology ever; it was a classic upon its release.  I will have to upgrade to this Arrow release.  If you have not seen this give your self a treat and spin it tomorrow.  Highly recommended.

Howling 2: Your Sister is a Werewolf- A man discovers that his sister was a werewolf, and helps an investigator track down a gang of the monsters through the United States and eastern Europe.  I have not seen this in a long time but I do remember it was the last good Howling movie.

The Walking Dead- After hapless pianist and ex-con John Elman is framed for murder, he is resurrected by a scientist after his execution.  I love me some Karloff.

Crackcoon- A raccoon ingests a discarded synthetic drug and mutates into a vicious killer. It rampages through a mountain community, threatening campers, tourists, and residents. No one is safe from the monstrous raccoon's violent onslaught.  You heard of Cocaine Bear?  Now we get this.  I am intrigued.

Pumpkin Man- Cromwell is a town intertwined with that of a local legend; The Pumpkin Man. People don't believe the tales, but when Catherine discovers the missing piece of the legend, she and her friends will face with the Demon of Fall... Kürbis.  This looks like it would play well as your third movie in a horror movie marathon.

New Release Tuesday

Oh, this is probably the best Tuesday of the year so I had to chime in on that here.  Have you been to Target lately?  Mine has removed all movies to make room for books.  So, no need to go there anymore since they are not carrying movies and you never know what weirdos will be in the restroom there.  Unfortunately, Mr. Amazon will be delivering most of these titles below but I am going to give Wally World an opportunity to sell me something if they have anything.  On to the list:

Deadpool and Wolverine- Deadpool is offered a place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe by the Time Variance Authority, but instead recruits a variant of Wolverine to save his universe from extinction.  This is a lot of fun and is a Marvel hail mary of sorts because their last few movies have absolutely sucked.  Marvel's desperation paid off as this movie cleaned up at the box office so we can expect Hugh Jackman to keep playing Logan for another decade and Ryan Reynolds to keep buying cell phone companies and soccer clubs.

Twisters- Kate Carter, a retired tornado-chaser and meteorologist, is persuaded to return to Oklahoma to work with a new team and new technologies.  This was a great summer movie and this requel was done just right and had plenty of nods to the original.  Highly recommended.

The Hitcher- A young man who escapes the clutches of a murderous hitchhiker is subsequently stalked by the hitcher and framed for his crimes.  This is the first time that has been released on Blu Ray here in the states and I am glad I held out for this instead of opting for an expensive import.  Thanks WB!  This is one creepy thriller with Rutger Hauer at his best here.  If you have not seen this, take a ride with The Hitcher, the highest of recommendations.

In a Violent Nature- When a locket is removed from a collapsed fire tower in the woods that entombs the rotting corpse of Johnny, a vengeful spirit spurred on by a horrific 70-year old crime, his body is resurrected and becomes hellbent on retrieving it.  I have read great things about this one and I cannot wait to give it a spin.  But apparently I am going to have to wait longer because Mr. Amazon just sent a delayed shipping notice.  Blah!

The talent in front of and behind the camera is very good here but the movie turned out to be a turkey.  Bad word of mouth killed this and The Joker sequel so I got no desire to check this one out.  Actors say some projects you do for the money, I am guessing this was one of those projects.

Slay Ride- It's Christmas eve and the Kris Kringle Killer is on the loose and looking for his twelfth and final victim of the season. Unfortunately for her, Holly Woods is the final name on his naughty list.  I am always keeping an eye out for new Christmas Horror so I am getting started early this year.

New Release Tuesdays

Horizon: Chapter 1- Chronicles a multi-faceted, 15-year span of pre-and post-Civil War expansion and settlement of the American west.  Since Clint Eastwood bowed out of doing Westerns a long time ago, Kevin Costner is one of the few directors around who I know can give us a suitable Western.  This is a very ambitious project that has been in the works for years and it tanked hard at the box office but apparently it made up some ground on its digital release.  It is really good and beautifully shot but the only drawback is it is a plate setter for chapters 2-4.  There are a lot of stories going on here.  And I enjoyed them all.  I know 2 is in the can and has been pushed back for release but what about 3 and 4?  We’ll see.  It would help if you checked out Chapter 1.

Superfriends- The greatest of the DC Comics superheroes work together to uphold the good with the help of some young proteges.  Seven O’clock on Saturday mornings and I was up always up for the Superfriends.  I loved this show and always looked forward to their adventures even if it did involve the Wonder Twins and Gleek the blue monkey.  Kudos to Warner Archive for releasing this as a whole set even if the case sucks.

Late Night with the Devil- A live television broadcast in 1977 goes horribly wrong, unleashing evil into the nation's living rooms.  This might be the best horror movie of the year.  Just think Johhny Carson has a guest on the show that is possessed.  There is much going on here on this talk show and they nail the look and feel of 1977.  Highly recommended.

Reacher: Season 2- Itinerant former military policeman Jack Reacher solves crimes and metes out his own brand of street justice.  This season was not as good as the first but if you like kick ass action shows then check this out.  Season 3 is out in early 2025.  Bring it Amazon.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die- When their late police captain gets linked to drug cartels, wisecracking Miami cops Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett embark on a dangerous mission to clear his name.  Well, Will Smith is toxic and had to do something so might as well go for the sure thing.  I am sure this is generic action comedy like the others and Martin Lawrence was needing a gig too, will check it out soon.

Despicable Me 4- Gru, Lucy, Margo, Edith, and Agnes welcome a new member to the family, Gru Jr., who is intent on tormenting his dad. Gru faces a new nemesis in Maxime Le Mal and his girlfriend Valentina, and the family is forced to go on the run.

New Release Tuesdays

Ted Lasso- American college football coach Ted Lasso heads to London to manage AFC Richmond, a struggling English Premier League soccer team.  It is nice to see Apple put their best on physical media for everyone to enjoy.  This was a great series.  If you have not seen it, get to it.

Invasion USA- A one-man army comes to the rescue when the United States are invaded by communists.  My favorite Chuck Movie.  Chuck versus hundreds, if not thousands of terrorists with a couple of Uzi’s.  This is pure 80s glory and they do not make them like this anymore.  Highly recommended.

Sting- After raising an unnervingly talented spider in secret, 12-year-old Charlotte must face the facts about her pet-and fight for her family's survival-when the once-charming creature rapidly transforms into a giant, flesh-eating monster.  I love me some new horror and I have read good things about this one.

Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part 3- After raising an unnervingly talented spider in secret, 12-year-old Charlotte must face the facts about her pet-and fight for her family's survival-when the once-charming creature rapidly transforms into a giant, flesh-eating monster.  I have the first two but have not seen them yet but I will get to these someday.

Fall Guy- A down-and-out stuntman must find the missing star of his ex-girlfriend's blockbuster film.  I usually do not care for action comedies too much but I really enjoyed this in the theater.  Gosling has enough charisma to carry this movie and that is good because he and Blum have zero chemistry.  This is a shout-out to the stunt industry and there are many in this movie.

Strangers: Chapter 1- After their car breaks down in an eerie small town, a young couple is forced to spend the night in a remote cabin. Panic ensues as they are terrorized by three masked strangers who strike with no mercy and seemingly no motive.  I loved the original movie and considered it one of the best horror movies of its time.  The sequel came out way too late and did not have the same feel at all.  I was interested in this series of reboots coming out (Yep there will be two more) because director Renny Harlin was doing them and he has had a history of good films (Cliffhanger, Die Hard 2) with some horror (Prison, Nightmare on Elm St. 4).  I enjoyed this a lot and it has the same creepy atmosphere and feel as the original.  I look forward to Chapters two and three soon.  They have already been filmed.

New Release Tuesdays

There has been some good stuff come out lately.  Let's take a look at some of the good stuff.  Kudos so Wal Mart for having some of these on the shelf so I do not have to depend on the Amazon man for all titles.

Civil War- A journey across a dystopian future America, following a team of military-embedded journalists as they race against time to reach DC before rebel factions descend upon the White House.  I am not sure about this one, this is a very touchy subject right now but I liked Alex Garland’s movies.  Will eventually get around to it.

New Adventures of Batman- Batman, Robin and Batgirl fight crime in Gotham City with the "help" of Batmite.  I love me anything Batman and I am very happy this got a blu release.  It was great having Adam West and Dick Ward back as the Caped Crusaders voicing.  Do not get me wrong Bat-Mite sucks but that’s what they had to do back in the 70s cartoons.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire- When the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second ice age.  I think I have gone on record saying this before:  I am not a big Ghostbusters fan.  Pass.

Abagail- After a group of criminals kidnap the ballerina daughter of a powerful underworld figure, they retreat to an isolated mansion, unaware that they're locked inside with no normal little girl.  I have read great things about this movie and I like how the director came out ad said the marketing department gave away the end and spoiled the movie.   Well marketing did spoil it.  If you do not know who this little girl belongs to do not look it up and enjoy the movie.

Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare– The British military recruits a small group of highly skilled soldiers to strike against German forces behind enemy lines during World War II.  I enjoyed this action war movie very much.  Its got Reacher and Superman in it so what’s not to love?  This is the best Guy Ritchie movie I have seen recently, and this plays a lot like Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds.

Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire- Two ancient titans, Godzilla and Kong, clash in an epic battle as humans unravel their intertwined origins and connection to Skull Island's mysteries.  This one is not as good as the last one but I have been enjoying these a lot.  Kudos to Warner Brothers for keeping the budget in check and putting it into the visual effects and making it fun and profitable.  I look forward to the next one.

Perfect Weapon- An expert in "kenpo" karate avenges his Koreatown friend, slain by a mobster in Los Angeles.  This came out during the Seagal/ Van-Damme hey days and came and went with a whimper from what I recall.  Speakman became a working actor and was supposed to be on Walker, Texas Ranger in the later seasons but Judson Mills ended up with the role.  It’s a nice release from Kino Lorber and a pretty good action flick.

Last Kumite- One last kumite, one final battle - for the life of his daughter.  The lead in this is not very good but the movie is a very good homage to Bloodsport.  There are some great looking fight sequences in this action flick.  Shout out to Viking Samurai.

Robocop 2- RoboCop returns to protect the citizens of old Detroit but faces a deadly challenge when a rogue OCP member secretly creates a new, evil RoboCop 2.  This movie has grown on me over the years.  I considered it a disappointment when I first saw it but then I saw Robocop 3 and that makes this one look a whole lot better.  When are they bringing Robo back?  Peter Weller is not getting any younger.

Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid- Pat Garrett is hired as a lawman on behalf of a group of wealthy New Mexico cattle barons to bring down his old friend Billy the Kid.  I love Westerns but have never seen this one so I was elated when Criterion announced this awhile back.  Picked this up at Barnes and Noble during their Criterion sale for the month.
