Scream Factory Presents John Carpenter's The Fog

Scream Factory continues to spoil us horror fans and will be releasing the classic John Carpenter's The Fog this July.  This little gem always gets lost in Carpenter horror movie discussions as Halloween and The Thing are known as his best but this a a really good ghost story.  The Fog features one of the best casts Carpenter ever assembled with Jamie Lee Curtis, Adrienne Barbeau, Hal Holbrook, Tom Adkins and John Houseman as he sets the tone to start the movie.  I love the cover art for this!  Great horror movie and be sure to check it out over at Scream Factory

2013 movies to Look Forward To

Looking forward to some of the flicks Tinseltown has laid out for us this year.  Here are some and they are not necessarily in any order.  Or are they?

Director Guillermo Del Toro returns to duty behind the camera finally.  This is giant robots fighting monsters.  Sounds pretty cool huh?

I loved the Lone Ranger as a kid and I have my high ho silver hopes up for this summer flick.  This movie was plagued by all sorts of issues starting with the budget, The Lone Ranger got busted for pot in West Texas, and weather caused all sorts of delays.  I look forward to checking this semi-western out.

Tony Stark returns to a solo project that hopefully means the movie will not be bogged down with all the Avenger initiatives that part 2 was saddled with.

Danny Trejo and director Robert Rodriguez return for another chapter of Machete.  Let the fiesta begin!

I think my wife may be looking more forward to this than me and this cannot be any worst than the last one, right?

Saw the trailer for this the other day and man I am jazzed for this now.  This is looking pretty good now and Michael Shannon as Zod may be the best casting of the year.

Chucky is making a comeback and it sounds like he makes a more serious return to horror.  I loved the comedic turn of the last two but it's time Chuck got back to his roots.  And Brad Dourif returns too!

New Stars Wars director J.J. Abrams brings us his next Star Trek chapter.  The crew of the Enterprise I am sure will have to defend the planet.

Director Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, and Nick Frost all return to complete their most excellent trilogy.  Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz are among the best comedies of the last decade so it is also a bit sad that this greatness comes to an end.

Looks like Men in Black to me but with a much better lead actor.  Jeff Bridges carries over his Rooster Cogburn to this sci-fi, comedic role.

Since the Rock is on board I will keep watching these.

The movie has been through more issues than the Lone Ranger so I head into this very cautiously.  This has zombies going for it and that may be enough to salvage it.

The Escape Plan

Sly and Arnold star in this action flick that has them teaming up to escape from a high tech prison.

The Tomb Changed to The Escape Plan

Sly and Arnold's new movie The Tomb scored a name change and  a new release date this week.   Look for The Escape Plane a week earlier on September 13, 2013!

Psycho IV: The Beginning 1990

Psycho IV: The Beginning was the last time we see Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates in this made for Showtime movie that did not get a big screen release.  This movie is set primarily as a prequel as Norman is out of the looney house again and seems to be living a normal life.  He is home cooking and listening to talk radio as he waits for his wife to get home to celebrate his birthday.

The talk radio show Norman is listening to just happens to be about sons that kill their mothers otherwise known as matricide.  Norman decides to call in and says his name is “Ed”, an obvious wink to Ed Gein, which Psycho is based on.  Norman talks about his relationship with his mother and this has the movie going back and forth in a series of flashbacks starring ET’s Henry Thomas as a young Norman.  As Norman talks about his past experiences with his mother he is reliving the bad relationships with her and her boyfriend and this is making Norman a little edgy as the night goes on.
Eventually the talk radio host discovers who she is really talking to and begins to really dig into Norman to find out why he did the things he did and he if he intends to kill again.  Here Norman discloses he does have some future plans but you will have to watch to see what ol’ Norman does.

I first watched this on VHS right when it came out and was not too impressed with it back then but my viewing this week has changed my opinion.  It was great seeing Anthony Perkins as Norman one last time.  Perkins had been recently diagnosed with AIDS so you so just sit back and admire his last take as Norman Bates as he played it just as well the last time as in the original.  I liked the way director Mick Garris (The Stand, Sleepwalkers) portrayed the tension between Norman and his mother and it makes you feel sorry for Norman because his mother was crazy.

This appeared to be quite a tight production as the Bates Motel and house were reconstructed on the Orlando Universal Studio lot and all filming was done there while the park was open.  Director Mick Garris has stated he had many creative differences with Perkins during filming because Perkins wanted to direct but since Psycho III was a commercial failure there was no way the studio was letting him direct.  Perkins did praise Garris for his direction and liked how the movie turned out.  Recommended.  So go give it a spin then start watching Bates Motel to see the new Norman.

Happy Birthday Kane Hodder!

Happy Birthday to one of my favorite horror icons: Kane Hodder.  Hodder got his start in the movies as a stuntman in the late 70s and has had quite a career in Hollywood as an actor, stuntman, stunt coordinator, and horror icon.  The hockey mask above should give you a clue to his most famous role as Friday the 13th’s Jason.  Hodder donned the hockey mask the most in four of the films.  He continues to work in horror and action movies and right now right is most famous for his turn as Victor Crowley in the Adam Green’s Hatchet trilogy.  Hatchet 3 comes out this June!

Movie Poster Thursday- Cool Hand Luke

Yu was Almost Perfect on Tuesday!

1 out away from perfection.  Reminds me of the World Series Game 6.  1 strike away.  Twice.

Anyway it was a fantastic game non the less and I expect a great season from this guy.

New Release Tuesday

The is the absolute slowest week and month on the calender so far.  Today's release with a certain Spaghetti Western on April 16th are about it for this month.

I love all of director Don Coscarelli movies.  Starting with all the Phantasms, Beastmaster, and up to Bubba Ho Tep the guy make makes great stuff on a limited budget so his creativity shines because of it.  This was slated to come out last year but we finally get it!  This looks really weird and funny which are trademarks of a great Coscarelli film.  Now bring on the Bubba Ho Tep sequel!

That's all we get this week.  Really.
