What do you watch for Halloween?
As said before The Gauntlet loves horror movies and has a set few that he always watches on or around Halloween. Being that the holiday is on a Monday this year and The Gauntlet is back to work, Friday night will be the scary movie night at the house. On tap for then will be Albert Hitchcock's Psycho, John Carpenter's Halloween, and Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Three of the greatest horror movies ever in my opinion. So sit back this Halloween weekend and enjoy a good horror flick.
New Release Tuesday
My second favorite Summer movie and one of my comic book favs comes out this week. I love the origin story of this movie and the casting was superb for this big action flick. Director Joe Johnson did a really nice job and nailed the 1940's setting of this period pic. It reminds me of a movie of his twenty years ago, The Rocketeer.
The Rangers lead the World Series 3-2 so let's hope they bring it home! Good luck boys!
This is one of the year's best reviewed movies that did not get a wide release here in the states so hopefully it will get some nice business on home video. This is a throwback to 80s style horror.
This week we get one of those long lost buried treasures from Francis Ford Coppola. The director actually owns the film and it has not been available for some time so it is nice to finally get a release on this after reading about it for so long. Stars the great and I guess retired Gene Hackman.
Sons of Anarchy season 4 continues and just keeps getting better, Clay is a bad man, The Walking Dead came back last week and FX's American Horror Story has been solid so far. Nice TV viewing going on right now.

R.I.P. Fritz Manes
A child hood friend of Clint Eastwood's and a producer of many of his films died back on September 27. Frtiz served on most of Eastwood's films from 1976's The Gauntlet to 1986's Heartbreak Ridge and had some stand in roles in many of them as well. The two had a falling out after Heartbreak Ridge and does not seemed to have done much else in Hollywood.
Top 10: Horror Comedies
I love to mix in some horror-comedy during the spooky holiday. I am not talking Abbot and Costello meet Frankenstein but some genuine horror that mixes in a few laughs, except for maybe a couple here. You decide when you give them a spin.
- American Werewolf in London: Director John Landis hot off the success of Animal House and The Blues Brothers moved to horror and did what few did back then. He put some funny moments in it. And it worked brilliantly. Griffin Dunne steals the show as his rotting corpse shows up through out the movie. "Remember the Alamo!"
- Return of the Living Dead: A goofy sequel of sorts to 'Night of the Living Dead' as the movie is even referenced when the two guys are looking in the barrel. Classic 80's style, music, and zombie gore. "Send more cops."
- Evil Dead 2: The continuing adventures of Ash and his girlfriend out at a cabin in the middle of nowhere while a mysterious book is about to change their lives. " I don't think so. We just cut up our girlfriend with a chainsaw. Does that sound "fine"?"
- The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2: Director Tobe Hooper returns to continue on his classic tale of chainsaw yielding cannibals but he adds a little humor of his own. Chop Top steals the show here. "Peel that pig and slice him thick"
- Hatchet: Director Adam Green makes a fine horror debut with this 80s throwback. A nice little story where the director makes quite a few winks at the audience which makes it entertaining and a bit funny. "Are you sure the number is 911?"
- From Dusk til Dawn: Two bank robbers are making a break for Mexico and picks up some insurance hostages along the way and then meets up with some interesting nocturnal individuals. Directed by Robert Rodriguez and co-written by Quentin Taratino so you know there is some humor here. Some great stars show up in this. "We're having a wet bikini contest, and you just won"
- Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon: A slasher wanna be lets a documentary film crew follow him as he cases his next victims. A funny little tale that lets you in on some little horror secrets and has some great horror icon cameos in it. "It is going to get wet in here tonight. Lace your boots up kiddies."
- Shaun of the Dead: Director Edgar Wright headed this excellent comedy horror that depicts a man getting his left together while fighting off the living dead. "As Mr. Sloan always says, there is no "I" in team, but there is an "I" in pie. And there's an "I" in meat pie. Anagram of meat is team... I don't know what he's talking about"
- Zombieland- Zombies have taken over the planet as a foursome tries to survive and make their way to Disneyland or a.k.a. Pacific Playland. A fun movie with its own set of rules. "Time to nut up or shut up!"
- Seed of Chucky- The Child's Play series goes black comedy in this final chapter of the Chucky series with many B movie guests. "He looks like the kid that fell off the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down."
New Release Tuesday
Warner Brothers continues to release top notch animated features and this one is based on Frank Miller's book of the same name. It is an origin story of how Bruce Wayne became Batman and his relationship with Jim Gordon. This one has been getting good reviews. Now if Warner could get their live action movies on par with their animated ones.
I saw the first one and it seemed just like the beginning of a big money grubbing franchise. It appears I was correct, all looks and bad stories.
One of my favorites from the 90's. I watched this laser disc many times and it looks like they finally got the authoring of this disc correct so now night scenes look like night scenes. A budding rock star and his mate are killed by a ruthless gang and he comes back to avenge their death. The jewel here is Brandon Lee, he left us way too soon. Has a killer soundtrack and score to support it.
Still on Sons of Anarchy season 4 as I fear we had a big loss last night. Archer season 1 is really good too.
The Rangers are back in the World Series for the second year in a row. I am getting used to this, now let's go win four more!

R.I.P. Charles Napier
The great character actor Charles Napier passed away last week at the age of 75. He is probably best known for three great roles: Tucker McElroy as the band leader of 'The Good Ol' Boys', Murdock in Rambo: First Blood Part 2, and Lt. Boyle, one of Dr. Hannibal Lector's guards in Silence of the Lambs. A gifted character actor with a fantastic voice was a working actor from the late sixties and still has some credits listed from last year. Chuck will be missed but will always show up in my house quite a bit. Now go have some corn on the cobb with Jake.

New Release Tuesday
Brad Pitt and Sean Penn star in director Terrence Malick's latest. The story centers around a family with three boys in the 1950s. One of the best reviewed movies of the year and knowing Malick it probably has gorgeous scenery shot in Austin.
Looks like a mundane, worthless summer comedy but with a nice cast so it may just get a viewing from me.
Sons of Anarchy season 4 marches on I have started Archer season 1 for something new to watch.
The Rangers are up 2-0 on the Detroit Tigers in the ALCS and are off to Detroit. Two more wins and we're back in the series!

Top 10: Horror Sequels
I love horror movies and if I find a good one I will check out all the sequels if any. These below are the tops from horror franchises.
- Psycho II- I remember this is one of the first movies we rented on VHS to watch on our new VCR. Horror was very popular in the late seventies/ early eighties and Universal figured they might as well bring back to the life the best horror movie of all time and let Norman Bates out of the institution. Great job by the late Anthony Perkins, he just stepped right back into the role without missing a beat.
- Halloween II- Halloween was the most profitable independent movie of its time so a sequel was inevitable. Director Carpenter stepped aside produced, wrote, and did the music for this flick. This movie picks up right where the first one left as Michael continues to terrorize Haddonfield.
- The Devil's Rejects- Rob Zombie made a descent movie in House of 1000 Corpses but really stepped it up in this sequel of the continuing adventures of the Firefly family.
- Evil Dead 2- Technically this is a remake of Evil Dead that was made on a dime so this is basically the same movie with alot more bucks behind it so the story was expanded abit. Ash never looked so cool with a chainsaw.
- Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors- Part 2 of this franchise was awful so this entry was a make or break of Freddy being in people's nightmares. Original cast member Heather Langenkamp returned to lead some teenagers against Freddy in their dreams.
- Friday the 13th Part 2- A nice follow up to the original as a grown up Jason makes his debut and takes over the killing for Mommy against the horrible Camp Blood counselors.
- Blade II- The first Blade was really good as comic book movies were not quite going yet as a fine character was introduced. Director Guillermo del Toro took over this sequel and stepped it up and and created some fantastic vampire and non vampire-villains for Blade to line up against. Also glad to see Kris Kristofferson return in this sequel.
- Bride of Frankenstein- Our monster and Dr. Frankenstein are revealed to still be alive in this sequel. The good doctor's wife is kidnapped and he is forced to create a mate for his first creation.
- Underworld 2- The war between Vampires and Werewolves continues as we go back into the past to learn some more about this rivalry and some of the bloodlines of it.
- Jason X- Friday the 13th was on hiatus for eight years so Jason just coming back to the big screen was a big deal. Jason continues killing and this time takes it to outer space in the future. Good times.
New Release Tuesday
I have enjoyed the first and the last movies of this franchise and adding the Rock to this entry has peaked my interest yet again. Cool cars, fast action, and two bald guys fighting each other should lead to some nice mindless viewing for awhile. This movie was the leading cash grabber until the big summer movies came out and the reviews for this were positive.
Director Wes Craven made a comeback with Scream and it really jump started horror in its day when it was getting a bit stale. Scream 2 was good enough and part 3 was awful so that put this franchise to bed for awhile. All involved here (Craven, Campbell, The Cox-Arquettes, and the Weinsteins) have been on a career downer lately so what better way to jump start things by making a sequel. Reviews were descent on this and it did barely break even at the box office so there will have to be a alot of DVD and blu ray sales to justify another sequel.
Just wrapped up Dexter Season 3 and what a great show. Dex wrapped up another season by nabbing the killer and getting married. This should make things interesting for season 4. Sons of Anarchy keeps on riding and Clay keeps getting deeper into trouble.
The Rangers beat the Rays to advance to the ALDS against the Tigers and I like the Rangers chances because we have a deeper bullpen. Let's hope Nelson Cruz gets his timing back and solidifies this offense.
